Bishop, Calif., May 22, 2024 — Due to the remaining snow depth within parking areas along Lake Mary Road and pedestrian safety issues, officials will be keeping the Lakes Basin winter gate closed to public vehicular traffic for Memorial Day weekend.

A free shuttle bus service will be provided by Eastern Sierra Transit Authority (ESTA), and pedestrian and bicycle traffic will still be allowed.

Inyo National Forest will continue working with Town of Mammoth Lakes officials and other partner agencies to plow the remaining snow as quickly as possible. There is no anticipated opening date yet for public vehicle access.

Campgrounds

Also due to the high levels of snow, campground opening dates in the Lakes Basin will need to be postponed between May 31 and June 7. Conditions are assessed weekly and opening dates will be posted on our website: www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/inyo/recreation
